We used to trust an adversarial press to distill facts from propaganda. Now the state openly poisons the well with lies, and Big Media gladly drinks it up.
The press, long considered the Fourth Estate of civilized society, has completely lost the trust of the American public. It’s for good reason. As its relevancy dropped off a cliff in this age of the citizen journalist, it needed to do something to get attention and stay afloat. So it told us bigger and bigger lies.
It’s cheaper and faster to tell lies to get flash-in-the-pan headlines than do the hard work of sourcing fact-based journalism. So the press decreased its truth content and increased its propaganda. Easily sourced stories pushed by K Street lobbyists and PR firms are much easier to write. In fact, the stories are practically written before they even land on the reporter’s desk.
What people don’t know about journalism is that propaganda is to journalism what cheap Chinese products are to American retailers.
